Display a Thanks! button or a fancy heart or something somewhere on the repo page that shows "thank the maintainers for this repository" in a tooltip. Clicking should display a delightful CSS animation.

Clicking it or hitting the correct binding in the TUI should do nothing more than increment a counter in the database.
